Due to THC, a molecule responsible for altering consciousness, your most infamous association with hemp is marijuana. As a multi billion dollar industry, Marijuana is everywhere. Associations as diverse as California, Dave Chapelle and the Drug Enforcement Agency have people inhaling or ingesting it for any number of reasons. It’s been called a gateway drug for serious addictions.
Twenty years ago my dear friend committed suicide, and I sheltered with Marijuana as a means of avoiding all the feels. I’ve spent much of the time since then numb. It was easier. Until it wasn’t.
In the process of getting sober, Elena Brower suggested that I was choosing slavery to a substance. It provoked some deep self inquiry about the contrasts of nature vs. nurture within. My father being an alcoholic, I felt from a young age that that was not my path. It’s part of what allowed me to give Marijuana a free pass. It was mine, and gave my addict some purchase.
My daily practice of meditation taught me that I was capable of expressing my will. In pursuit of magic, I chose to go a year without altering my consciousness.
Yet years spent under the influence had left my curiosity piqued. Beyond affecting my perception, what were some of the effects that I had experienced for so long? One question was what of the health benefits afforded from cannabis. Cue Marijuana’s lesser known sibling, industrial hemp.
One of the first crops domestically cultivated in Mesopotamia around 8000 B.C, industrial hemp has a long history with humankind. For over 2000 years, it was the world’s largest agricultural crop, being a source of paper, fabric, rope, food and medicine. The Declaration of Independence was printed on hemp as well as the Bible and Alice in Wonderland.
Over 23,000 peer reviewed journal articles existing on PubMed document the efficacy of this plant on your nervous system. It’s a deep rabbit hole, but any desire to know more best begins by reading the abstract found here. The top of the page where it’s summarized will do. For deeper dives, Google PubMed, CBD and the issue that most affects you and your loved ones. Alternatively, ask that friend of yours that is up on all the health trends. You know the one.
Here’s the gist: with the help of Omega 3 fatty acids, your body naturally produces something called a Cannabinoid. Also derived from plants, there are many different cannabinoids that function as messengers, or chemical communicators. They encourage internal processes to move and to stop. Think your body’s gas pedal and brake. The endocannabinoid system, only discovered in 1992, a naturally occurring part of the central nervous and immune systems, is designed to receive a cannabinoid.
Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid product of industrial hemp known as CBD.
CBD’s promotes homeostasis, or movement of the bodies internal processes towards equilibrium. Cannabinoid messengers facilitate that process as a support network.
For a number of reasons described in subsequent posts, I began taking Prime My Body’s Hemp Oil at the beginning of the year. The company’s termed it Hemp Oil because, as a dietary supplement, it’s free from persecution by the DEA. This makes it available to people who need it, when they need it.
My Nannie influenced my interest in wellness. She’s been a messenger for me, my support network, linking me to a long line of lineage bearers who have held the practice of union, or Yoga.
My last time with her, she held my hand and called me by my Father’s name. Suffering from Dementia, the lines of her memory were blurring. I was grateful for being able to be there with her but what I witnessed scared me.
Both of my grandmothers suffered from Dementia. Discovering Yoga so young had provided a balanced relationship to aging. Aging was clearly not going to stop, but what about meeting the process?
The unique being that you are is deserving of the greatest chance at success. A teacher of mine once suggested that it was unclear which vitamin or supplement could free the body’s potential for longevity.
Consider CBD to be a nutritional supplement that has been missing from your diet for a long time. Everyone being unique, deficiencies express themselves differently.
What to do?
Keep calm, and google CBD.
